Where it all Began
The Bradlees story began in 1958 with the opening of its very first store in New London, Connecticut. Built on a simple idea—offering quality merchandise at prices families could afford—Bradlees quickly earned a reputation for value without compromise. The name "Bradlees" was inspired by Bradley International Airport, where the founders first met to shape their vision.
Just three years later, Bradlees joined the Stop & Shop family, setting the stage for decades of growth as one of the Northeast's most recognizable discount department store chains, serving millions of shoppers across the region.
At its peak, Bradlees operated more than 130 stores across the Northeast and generated nearly $2 billion in annual sales, making it one of the region's largest discount department store chains.

When Everyone Shopped at Bradlees
Through the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Bradlees became THE destination for families across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and beyond. Saturday trips to Bradlees were practically a Northeast tradition.
The Swinging Sixties
Bradlees expanded rapidly across New England. Mod fashions, vinyl records, and affordable housewares filled the shelves. Families discovered a one-stop shop unlike anything they'd seen.
The Groovy Seventies
Bell-bottoms, lava lamps, and 8-track players. Bradlees had it all. The chain pushed into New York and New Jersey, becoming a regional powerhouse with dozens of new stores.
The Radical Eighties
VHS tapes, Atari games, neon everything. At its peak, Bradlees ran over 130 stores. The toy aisle alone could make a kid's entire year. This was the golden era.

When the Giants Came to Town
The 1990s brought brutal competition. Walmart, Target, and Kmart were expanding aggressively into Bradlees' Northeast turf. In 1995, Bradlees filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the first time — a gut punch to loyal shoppers everywhere.
The company fought back, restructuring and reopening stores, but the retail landscape had changed forever.

Goodbye, Old Friend
In 2000, Bradlees filed for bankruptcy a second time. Despite loyal customers, community support, and a brand that meant something real to millions of people, the chain couldn't survive the retail wars.
After 43 years of serving communities across the Northeast, Bradlees closed its final stores in 2001, concluding an era in retail history.
